WHAT IS ODONTOMAS?

According to the Journal of the Pakistan Medical Association, odontomas are usually formed from dentine and enamel and contain different amounts of pulp tissue and cementum, the same components that our teeth are made of, and are the most common type of odontogenic tumor. Odontomas are of two types:

  • Compound odontoma
  • Complex odontoma

Compound odontomas refer to the type in which the tissues are arranged in a similar way as the tooth while complex odontomas refer to when the dental tissues are organized in a messy, cluttered manner. Odontomas may resemble a badly shaped teeth. They affect the growth of the teeth they have formed around and prevent the teeth from erupting from the gum. They do not have any particular symptoms that can make it apparent except for the discomfort, swelling, pain, or bad alignment of teeth. Most of these tumors are formed within the jaw. It is rare for odontomas to erupt into the oral cavity and be exposed. It can also be genetic as people with Gardner syndrome and Hermann’s syndrome may be more prone to developing odontomas

How Are Odontomas Diagnosed?

A check-up at the dentist and an x-ray can reveal its presence. It is most common in children and teenagers when teeth are still developing. Odontomas create a barrier that prevents teeth from coming out of the gum, so it is very important for children to be regularly checked by the dentist and if diagnosed in its early stages, surgical removal can be prevented.

How Can Odontomas Be Treated?

Treatment may vary depending on the type of growth, the stage of growth, and the symptoms but in most cases requires surgical removal. Your dentist and a maxillofacial surgeon can provide you with better care and options on how to treat this tumor. Though odontomas is a tumor, it is not cancerous, it does not spread or cause harm and is treatable.
